# Coupons for subscriptions and payment plans

> Understand how coupon duration and edits apply to recurring payments.

**Coupons** on Kajabi allow you to design special promotions and deals for your Offers. Refer to this guide for examples of various advanced coupon scenarios.

## How duration works

Three rules cover nearly every scenario:

* **Duration counts payments, not calendar time.** A coupon set to repeat for 2 months discounts the first two payments. Once applies to the first payment only. Forever applies to every payment.
* **Annual subscriptions bill once per year.** A duration shorter than 12 months only reaches the first payment. To discount multiple years, use increments of 12 months: 24 months covers two annual payments.
* **Discounts cap at 100% of each payment.** If the amount off exceeds the payment amount, the customer pays \$0 for that payment. The difference doesn't carry over.

### Examples

**100% off, once, on a \$100/month payment plan (6 months).** The first payment is free. The customer pays \$100 per month for the remaining five payments.

**100% off, repeating for 2 months, on a \$100/month payment plan (6 months).** The first two payments are free. The customer pays \$100 per month for the remaining four payments.

**100% off, repeating for 2 months, on a \$1,200 annual subscription.** The first annual payment is free. The 2-month duration doesn't reach the second year, so year two bills at full price.

**\$500 off, repeating for 3 months, on a \$1,200 annual subscription.** The customer pays \$700 at purchase. The duration doesn't reach the second year.

**\$500 off, repeating for 3 months, on a \$100/month payment plan (6 months).** The first three payments are free. The discount caps at 100% of each payment, so the extra \$400 per month doesn't apply. The remaining three payments bill at \$100.

### Editing a coupon on active subscriptions

Coupon edits apply to new redemptions only. Customers who already redeemed a coupon keep the discount amount and duration that were in place at purchase. For example, if a coupon set to repeat for 4 months is edited to Forever, existing subscribers keep the 4-month duration and new redemptions apply forever.
